Internship & Co-Op Programs

As part of our commitment to professional development, raSmith offers internship and co-op opportunities for students in their sophomore to senior years. Our 鈥渟tudent employees鈥� gain valuable, real-world experience in these programs to prepare for a professional career in one of our divisions.

Our internships and co-op positions help bridge the gap between college and professional full-time employment. Student employees receive extensive on-the-job training and mentoring through the following ways:

• Participate on a variety of challenging projects
• Work side-by-side with seasoned professionals
• Hone problem-solving abilities
• Develop technical skills

Internships and co-op positions differ in their durations. Internships consist of one term in the summer or a semester during the school year, and co-op roles include three terms (summer or semesters).

Additionally, raSmith offers a unique rotational co-op program. Student employees have the opportunity to work one term in (or 鈥渞otate鈥� through) three divisions at our firm 鈥� municipal engineering, transportation engineering, and construction services. Similar to our rotational engineer program for recent college graduates, this co-op role provides student employees with the following advantages:

• Customized mentoring and guidance
• Practical experience including field testing and inspection
• Skills development in software programs such as Civil 3D

Division gains new perspective for growth with Mortensen鈥檚 30 years of landscape architecture experience

Tom Mortensen, professional landscape architect (PLA), has received a promotion to assistant director of the land development services division at raSmith. Mortensen has been employed with raSmith since 2004. His career spans more than 30 years in the landscape architecture, planning, design and construction professions.

鈥淎s a site planner and landscape architect, Tom contributes a unique skill set to the land development services division,鈥� said David Cleary, director of land development services at raSmith. 鈥淭om鈥檚 perspective, as well as his experience on projects in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest, will be important as he focuses on growing our local and regional presence from our Brookfield, Wis. office. Our team works with architects, developers, general contractors, and owners in the retail/mixed-use, industrial, health care, senior living, residential, education and government sectors.鈥�

Mortensen will also continue to lead raSmith鈥檚 internal team of five landscape architects that support both private- and public-sector clients. A few of the site planning/landscape architecture projects that he is currently managing include the Waukesha City Hall, Waukesha, Wis.; Prairie鈥檚 Edge mixed-use development, Port Washington, Wis.; Foxtown Brewery and mixed-use development, Mequon, Wis.; and the Town of Cedarburg Sports Complex, Cedarburg, Wis.

Mortensen is a professional landscape architect licensed in Wisconsin and Arizona, and a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). He is a frequent public speaker and writer, and has given a number of presentations at regional and national conferences and professional organizations. Mortensen also teaches a class at the University of Wisconsin鈥揗ilwaukee School of Continuing Education for the Water Technology Certification Program.

The project expanded south, into the Village of Sturtevant, with help from funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Partnering with Sturtevant and Thompson & Associates AG真人平台官方网站tland Services, our ecologists conduct annual monitoring of invasive vegetation species. raSmith also helps lead control efforts along several miles of the restored streambank. The ecologists monitor and map invasive vegetation populations, which are followed by ongoing cutting and herbicide treatments.

raSmith and Thompson & Associates have also begun research on the control of reed manna grass, thanks to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Invasive Species grant. This research is also important to protecting river floodplains and marshes across eastern Wisconsin because the grass is aggressively invasive.

At the foot of the Rockies 鈥� the Front Range 鈥� Fort Collins is the business center of northern Colorado and home to Colorado State University. Reinvigorating a 1970s shopping mall, Alberta Development Partners sought raSmith鈥檚 shopping center site engineering and design expertise to reconfigure the tight and blighted 77-acre site into Foothills, Renaissance on the Front Range 鈥� a shopping, dining, events and entertainment destination.

Imperative to the site鈥檚 rehabilitation was creating better public transportation access to the shopping center. It was important to link the center with the MAX Bus Rapid Transit center and a new youth activity center located across the six-lane College Avenue. raSmith creatively rerouted an irrigation ditch and converted the abandoned ditch as an underpass for pedestrians and bicyclists, providing access without having to cross traffic.
